2025 Gold Cup Rules: Why Yellow And Red Cards Won’t Affect World Cup Co-Hosts

The next competition for these three countries is technically the 2026 World Cup, but due to the exception that FIFA has set for host countries, they are not affected by possible comments based on the accumulation of cards.

Shafelberg has missed the next competitive match in Canada (the opening match of the 2026 World Cup), but instead it can serve the comment when the team travels to Romania in a friendly match on September 5.

It also makes a difference for Mexico and the United States, which contains nine yellow cards combined to Sunday (four of the United States, five from Mexico). This change comes as a result of Article 69.3 of the FIFA Disciplinary Law, which states that “if a representative team hosts a final competition and therefore it is not required to participate in the matches qualifying to reach the final competition of this tournament and that its next official match in that final competition, then any comment will be implemented in the match to the next friendly match.”

This differs from the Concacaf Disciplinary Law, which states that any unconfirmed comment will be transferred at the end of the competition to “the next official match for the official national team or team.”
