Finally, one of Tom Cruise’s star students from… Top Gun: Maverick It made it to the Oscars. Monica Barbaro, who played Joan Baez in Completely anonymous I raised the CV as compelling Romantic and industrial foil For Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan, he is among the nominees for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s ceremony. (We’ll be thinking about her “You’re kind of an idiot, Bob” delivery for a long time.) Barbaro, a first-time candidate to play the popular middle-finger matriarch, joins the roster That includes evilariana grande butera, Brutalfelicity jones, concaveIsabella Rossellini, and Emilia PerezZoe Saldaña. For her, this is a seismic event on the scale of the Newport Folk Festival. “It’s beyond comprehension at this point in my career,” Barbaro said shortly after he was officially nominated. “Every moment in this film was another completely life-changing experience as well as the next.”
I’m so glad you are the oil that rose above the water for this nomination. You were amazing, Joan.
My mind is blown. It means the world to me, seriously. Thank you.
Tell me all about your day. Were you trying to stay distracted?
Let me tell you, I’m in London filming something right now, and I was in the middle of getting dressed when I heard the news. I was trying not to care about when the nominations would be announced. I was like, I don’t want to overthink this. There are so many amazing female performances this year. I would have been happy for everyone. I had a feeling that the movie, Timmy and Edward Norton, was going to get some love, so I was trying not to think of myself in it. So I was like, Yes, why don’t we measure now? But I was still fresh and refreshed. When my phone started to light up, I was on the floor. I’ve made peace with the possibility that it won’t happen, and this allows more room to be more enthusiastic. How can I address this? I have no idea. I can’t feel my toes.
You are in this wonderfully diverse category. I must have seen dozens of different predictions about who the final five nominees would be.
I’ve grown up with it Center stage. I was a ballerina when this movie came out, and Zoe Saldaña is the North Star of feminine strength. I really don’t know how you can limit these kinds of things to five people. I think the most exciting thing about this particular year is that it’s not just about the competitive supporting actress category because that’s “all women get.” The Lead Actress category was also very competitive. This year is full of excellent female performances. It gives me a lot of hope for women in cinema. To have my name among the final five is something I can’t even fathom yet.
Are you hoping this will lead to your first official meeting with Joan?
I hope so. Physically, we were never together. We talked on the phone while I was in production, and we recently texted.
Have you sent her congratulations yet?
No, because I have no idea if she’s tracking anything related to the Oscars. We text because I’m trying to do that this She will hold a charity concert next month in San Francisco. It’s a showcase of her amazing career. I’ll be filming in London for the next few weeks, so I’m just bouncing ideas off to her, like How do I get a round-trip ticket, stay the night, and then return to London to continue working? Where are my SkyMiles? She’s so cool and level-headed about it all.
What would your perfect day with her be?
We will have a great time beating drums and dancing in her garden. I think this would be the best moment for me to share with Joan. What do we do for the rest of the day? I don’t know and I don’t care. If I could dance in a drum circle with Joan, I would die right there.
Are there any nuances to her character that you’ve internalized since filming wrapped?
Even with her anxiety, Joan was able to calm others with her voice, music, and beliefs. I was a kid who loved being barefoot, and then the world came along and was like, You can’t do it all the time. And then I got this golden opportunity to be barefoot the whole time in the production, because Joan keeps talking about how she doesn’t want to wear shoes. I kept forcing people to let me stay barefoot in their homes in any situation.
Oscars ceremony You won’t The best original song performances this year, however In the past yearsthere was precedent for one-off musical moments for certain films. Would you have any interest in performing a song by Joan if given the opportunity?
Yes, of course. I’m a very intimidating person and I tend to take on the challenges that come my way. Thanks for that; I think this will haunt my dreams tonight. This would be another completely life-changing idea. One of my favorite experiences making this film was when I realized I could play “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” in one tempo. After this was a life time moment, I had complete tears. Being able to learn to play music, let alone – collaborate and perform with Timmy – and perform it live? I’m very lucky to have been involved in the life of a musician, if only for a moment. I respect performing musicians more than ever, which was already a lot. So I wouldn’t take this performance suggestion lightly. I’d be happy to know what happens if that happens.
Do you have any theories about what Timmy… will lead on Saturday Night Live?
i have nothing! It’s not his first rodeo Snell, But this will be special, for sure.
I hope it’s a pop single followed by a song The original Timmy Tim.
A small plate of all of the above. I wish I could be there, and I was actually trying to figure out how, but I’ll be watching with the rest of London the next morning.
