‘Super pod’ of more than 1,500 dolphins spotted off California coast | California
A group of dolphins that lasted miles and slipped across the Gulf of Carmel off the central coast CaliforniaAn extraordinary “super pod” for more than 1500 marine creatures.
“They were on the horizon that I feel as much as I can see,” said Captain Ivan Prodsky.
The view was rare: Risso is usually traveling in groups of 10 to 30 animals, according to the National Oceanic and Calgianization Department.
From a blown boat over an area of 20 feet (about 6 meters), Prodsky and a small team looking for gray whales that saw a magician when the dolphins jumped from the Gulf, where she was roaming while she was in the air. This type of dolphin can weigh with its mixed body and its head swollen up to 1100 pounds (about 499 kg) and reaches a length of 13 feet (3.9 meters).
Colin Talti, a marine biologist on a journey to track the annual immigration of gray whales, fired for lakes off the coast of Baja California in Mexico, “very amazing” to see more than 1500 dolphins wandering all over their boat.
She said that some were swimming at the front of the ship and using the waves to push it forward, a technique known as the bow riding.
“They were spending a great time. So they were penetrating everywhere … slapping the tail, and came directly to the boat. They seemed to have a big party.”
She said that the large mixture of adult dolphins and events was likely to be the result of several centuries and swimming south.
Although this is not the first time they saw this large group, it is not a common event.
The Monterrey coast is a particularly ideal location to discover dolphins because they prefer very deep water. Talti said that the submarine under the water means that it may swim closer to the beach than anywhere else along the California coast.
The team initially did not understand the extent of the super pod that appeared on Friday morning, believing that there were only several hundred dolphin.
“Once we put the drone, I was in the vast … I kept saying,” Look at my screen. Look at my screen. “Look at how much there is.” “It just blows my mind every time. He doesn’t get older.”
Talti described an unforgettable moment in particular on Friday, and she stood at the front of the boat and looked down to see many dolphins rotate on both sides and stare directly.
As the dolphins continue to interact with the boat, the team moved directly, while making sure to stay away by them.
“You don’t want to make any abstract maneuvers and may affect an animal. This is of course the last thing you want to do at all,” said Prodsky. “So we are just sailing with them. It was an incredible experience.”
