“I hope that people do not think it is a book on the history of the breasts,” Jennifer Fennie Boullan laughs by enlarging her apartment in New York City before publishing on Tuesday about “Divide: Men, Women and Survey between us.” Her recent memoirs come in the wake of President Trump’s executive order, who announces that a government The United States will only get to know the sexes – males and females.
“I call the book” Divide “because, to some extent, it comes to chapter: before and after. “The division is a wonderful word. This is what linguists call free because its definition contains the opposite. This means division, but this also means gathering. This also means the distance between things.”
Bouellan also played with the addresses of “Both Sides Now”, after Johnny Mitchell, and “He is not there”, “her first notes for her exit as” were not present “, in 2003.
“When I went out 25 years ago, no person was given official instructions on how to hate me,” she says. In some respects, things are easier 1738677148. The path that was, for me, is now a mysterious now. But in some respects, things are more difficult because increasing vision comes increasing. “
Bouellan talked to the Times about Kaitlin Jenner, religious hypocrisy, her transit daughter and Emilia Perez.
This interview was lightly edited and intensified for length and clarity.
How do you feel that your book comes out at the current political moment?
This is the question, right? Is it the best time to publish a book on the experience of transgender people, or is it the worst? I hope the time is right because the topics in the news. On the other hand, there are many topics in the news. I hope that people will take a moment to look at the stories that I tell because the story of the stories, as I think, is the best way to open hearts and enable people to sympathize.
What is your response to Trump’s executive matter?
I woke up in my bed amazed when I learned that I was a man again and that my wife returned to a marriage of two different sexes. The strange thing is that nothing has changed, at least nothing is close to hand. Perhaps this is the lesson to be followed: they can make all the laws and ads they want, but nothing will change the truth. Not for a person who never met me to announce that he knows my soul is better than me. I think I am a good expert in who I am over the years.
It makes me feel sad because what we face, among other things, is the failure of imagination. Understanding transgender people require a certain amount of imagination and willingness to understand the lives of people who differ from ourselves. It makes me a little cross because it does not seem to be such a heavy elevator.
The language you use to describe your existence before and after the transition is clear and clear. Are you worried at all He – she It can be used as a tale for advanced right -wing extremists who deny the presence of people converted?
They can bend anything outside the shape. Everyone knows what I am talking about when I say before the transition and after the transition. I realize that there are many ways to look at this. There is no unique sexual experience. The great thing is that we have many different ways to be us.
I am talking about my experience in the way I see and the way I think is easier for people who do not know anything about the experience of transgender people to understand it. It may differ how I talk about these issues to a little public audience from the way I discuss with a group of my colleagues. My main desire is to tell a story and provide people who have never thought about these things.
The right people will bend everything I say from every sane context, but in the end, do they understand that the province should mean leaving people alone? Do they understand that the matter from the Bible is to love each other even as I loved you? Do they understand that Jesus himself said, regarding converting people, let those who can accept this who can. “Some of the eunuchs because they were born character, and some of them are characteristics because they made a testicle by others, and there are some who made from the eunuch in order to serve God better. Let all those who can accept this who can.” [Matthew 19:12]. You want to quote the Bible, you want to dissuade my words about it. But in the end, all we can do is try to love each other and understand each other. I will say that I am in any prison in any prison that hides them for me.
In this memo, what do you make from the bishop Marian Body calling for mercy and intellectual response that followed?
Oh no, not a violent reaction to mercy! What a controversial thing, we deserve mercy and that the job of the President of the United States is to protect the weakness and the needy in this country. What an incredible controversy, the bishop must invite us to mercy and love each other. We have reached a world where the idea of mercy is political. It will be four years long.
It was a great sermon and it was a shame that we did not hear more during the campaign because Mr. Trump, in addition to being a very unlimited person, is a harsh person, and his policies are designed to choose weak and make everyone hate each other.
She also writes that “people who come out because Transluet now does not apologize for those they are. They are not pleading with forgiveness or understanding.” Do you think this will recede in light of the bills of more than anti -transit?
If there is anything, I think people will have an increasing feeling of anger that their desire to be themselves should be the work of anyone else. I can understand whether people are a little more cautious about those who share this information because we are being attacked as it has not happened before.
As a mother of a passing daughter, what is the advice or words of wisdom and consolation that she offers children now?
When my daughter came out as Trans, she did not want a lawyer. This should not be surprised by anyone-this does not seem like what your twentieth daughter wants to do? [Trans kids’] The experience is different enough for me that it may not be a spatial to give people about how to live their lives. When I advise, it is largely general. Use the shortcut: t symbolize treatment or talk. Find someone to talk to him. Do not keep everything inside. P stands for reading. There are a lot of good books about the experience now. I did not write them all, but I wrote most of them. [laughs] You stand for you. Be yourself as the best. You should not try to be Jenny Boulan. You should not try to be caitlyn jenner, God knows. E means orgasm. Find your bliss, with a warning to accept that you may not be able to get everything you want now. Now I look like a parent.
It is not an easy life. Now it seems more difficult than ever.
What do you offer to support the continuous Caitlyn Jenner of Trump, especially in light of the “gender” executive command?
I do not understand that. It supports someone who has just announced. The ultimate goal is to come from society. His support only indicates that it is more interested in issues that relate to its personal wealth and its distinction more than the lives of people like it. Or it may be stupid like the hammer bag.
Everyone is on [“I Am Cait,” the E! docuseries that followed Jenner’s transition and starred Boylan] Put our reputation on the line to open her heart. While I write in the book, “Nobody can accuse her of becoming a transgender encyclopedia.” it’s a shame.
And I wanted to ask you about Historical Oscar nomination for Carla Sofia Jaskoun For “Emilia Perez” – did you see him?
I did not, but it is in my list of tasks. Written a piece Washington Post is about “Will and Harper“I was pleased with this movie. I have seen a lot of documentaries and transgender films and are almost always terrible so that I can watch them anymore. What is almost bad is the extent to which these films that I think really distorted our loved experience in the widest scale, [cisgender] public. I need a clip and watch this movie. I have heard great things about it.
Bouellan will discuss her new novel in Vroman’s Library In Pasadina on February 25 at 7 pm
