Amal Clooney and Charlotte Tilbury on Sisterhood, Social Change, and Setting Boundaries

What do brothers mean to each of you?

hope: We have a lot of fun together.

Charlotte: A lot of fun. It is really important.

hope: Charlotte, as soon as you walk in the room, raise everyone’s morale. It is very positive, whether it is with a person who has just met for two seconds or her friends for a long time. I feel very lucky to have friends like her in my life.

Charlotte: It is true. Asala, honesty, altruism, sympathy, kindness, and the effect of change, I think this is a driving force.

If you can return and tell yourself the youngest – and pass your self -confidence – what will it be?

Charlotte: It appears your own authentic. I was not always confident. I am sure that Amal was not too, but you just have to feel fear, do it anyway, and believe.

hope: I try to tell the youth about the heart of their position on “Why am I?” To “why not me?” So they deal with an opportunity that you do not think “why they choose me” but “why not.” I was lucky – I grew up in a safe place; With the parents who supported me; Amazing education. Many girls do not have this start in life. They face very large barriers. It is a driving force in my work to remove those barriers. She was born in part of the world – in the Middle East – where many women do not have equal rights and many girls have the same opportunities as boys. The data, which is more than 600 million girls all over the world from children’s brides; More than 100 million girls from school; The disturbing rates of violence against women – whether in or outside the conflict areas.

So it was a driving force in my work to try to use legal tools to remove those obstacles wherever she can, so that the girl can start her life at the same opportunity as her brother. I think this also gives us a perspective when you see young girls in Iran with a backpack, in an attempt to protest their basic rights, and only think about the dangers that girls have to take all over the world to obtain basic freedom. This makes me think: if they can do what they do, then we can surely do a little more than where we stand. My work sometimes took me to dark places, but this perspective that I am trying to stick to – we are so lucky, and if we give this luck and have this opportunity, we must try to spread it.

Let’s finish with joy. Where do you find it?

Charlotte: life. Each side of it. Glory fills me with joy.

hope: The people I love – my husband, our children, and our friends, fill our home with people we love. This is the greatest joy in my life and what gives me balance.

Charlotte: Yes, in the end everything about love.
