Halle Berry Didn’t Know She Was in Perimenopause for 10 Years. Now Her Life’s Mission Is to Help Women Through It

I had so many severe headaches, I didn’t feel like I could say, “I’m having menopausal symptoms, everyone.” I didn’t even have the language. I didn’t even know this was the state I was in. I’ve spent a lot of sleepless nights. I would come to work very tired, and I had to struggle with that.
What advice do you have for those approaching, or in, this time of life?
First of all, I think women should start thinking about this at 35 years old. When we are in our child-bearing years, there is no need to worry. Your body is naturally full of estrogen, unless you’ve had a hysterectomy or have another problem caused by it. [early] menopause.
At age 35, you should start to think that the estrogen is leaving. How do I want to live my middle years? If you want to go the HRT route [hormone replacement therapy]The earlier you start, the better. So I would say you should find a knowledgeable doctor who specializes in the menopausal body and make these decisions for yourself. Deep dive into this topic. Come to Respin, because that’s our mission – to help educate women, and to help them make informed choices so they can decide how they want to live their middle years.
If there’s anything that shows that menopause is truly magical, it’s that you recently re-weared Elie Saab’s dress for the 2002 Academy Awards. How did you feel?
Well, that was fun. Elie Saab and I have had a wonderful relationship for 20 years because of that moment. He appeared on the map, and I got to make history that same night. What we share is absolutely magical. And I actually got to meet him! I’ve never met him in all these years, so not only was I able to meet him face to face, but to be there to celebrate his career and wear that dress again was just a little magical moment.
You’re doing a lot of work with Respin now, and of course you’re still acting. What are some career goals you still have?
I now have a production company, so I want to produce and tell stories. I want guidance. I’m working on a project now, and when it’s ready, the wine will be poured. Acting is something I still love to do, but I’m going to focus more and more on the second act, which is my work at Respin, and recycling this thing called menopause And helping women recycle it for themselves. This is really what I’m most excited about.
