A group of 8 artists lived in a mall for 4 years — this documentary uncovers their secret world

while Shopping centers They were subjected to difficult times due to the ease of online shopping, and a return to the beginning of the twenty -first century, they were desirable places to get out of them – noisy and full of people who, in 2003, a group of eight artists, led by Michael Townsin, got rid of living in a secret apartment they built in the Mall of the productivity place in Rodge in Rods, Rod Island.
The wonderful new documentary “Secret mall apartment“It is directed by Jeremy worker (” Layla in the World “and its production Jesse EisenbergHe tells this amazing real story, which was described by one of the characters who were interviewed in the film as “artwork”, “Performance art“Ingreational” and “joke”. Townsund, along with the seven conspirators – whose names were not revealed until this film is made – their ranks for the first time in 17 years to describe the reason for doing so, and how they have not been discovered for a long time.
“It seems that you should not be able to withdraw it,” said one of the artists, but Townsand and his friends have slowly developed this unstable area without windows, downloading it in a sofa, and TV (and PlayStation), A large wardrobe, table, chairs and dozens of cement blocks to create an area described by one “accurate” as one of the comic play. (Their shots move great.) They ran a wire extension of the stealing of the electricity and they had a waffle iron for breakfast when they were not eating a snack on the popcorn who got it from the IMAX theater in the mall. It was a great space-until Townsund was arrested.
Workman includes a lot of background on Townsund, a tape art artist, who teaches children how to create art, and with its erosion, make 9/11 Memorial Monument In New York City, among other projects.
Townsund cleanses; It provides a technical comment on Urban improvement and renewal In Provence, as well as capitalism and unrealistic delusions/cannot be achieved Consumption. But it may go out of life without any end game. Whatever the reason, the act of its resistance is inspiring as the fun Workman movie programs.

How did you hear about this wonderful story and how did you imagine making this movie after 17 years of the event?
I met Michael Townsend randomly in Greece when I was filming “Lily’s falling world”. I was a meeting Ern Rubik We were in a cultural center, and it was covered with the art of the tape. As you know from “Secret Mall Apartment”, Michael is one of the greatest art artists in history. This building did in Greece. I was attracted to that. I have always made films about artists. We met and became friends. Tell me about this story. I thought he was completely punished. When I was very skeptical, he pulled a cracked iPad and showed me shots of them pushing the sofas to the top of the ladder. The jaw decreased. I wondered, how does this come not a huge movie? I began to spend the coming months to get it and everyone else to allow me to make the movie. What I did not know is that many directors tried to make this movie. Artists have been contacted for 15 years and they always rejected people. Sadji was trying to find the right way to tell the story.
Michael Townsand sits outside the shopping center in Provence Playes in Proventins, Rod Island (with the permission of Jeremy worker)What are your impressions of Townsund when I met him, and how did you gain confidence in his story?
They came to them a lot of people and wanted to tell the side of the exciting story of New York – my God! They lived in the mall for four years! Oh, my God! They were eating in Food Court! Of course, I loved this part of the story – how you could not?! – But what is really associated with me is how what they did on the side with their art is interconnected by the secret apartment. The secret apartment is a phrase [making] 9/11 Monument Monument. I was always interested in the biggest picture, which really spoke to Michael and others.
What do you think of the secret mall apartment? Did you participate and live there for four years if you can?
I don’t think I want to go there. It is crowded, it’s dark, it’s dirty, it’s dust, it is difficult to enter. There is this line Adriana [Valdez-Young]Michael’s ex -wife told me outside the camera: “I didn’t want to eat all of my meals in Panda Express“The imagination in the commercial center is not really for me. It is the passion of all these men who have become very important.
You can assemble some of the great shots that Townsand It was filmed over the four years with a small camera while he was “living” at the Provence Playa Center. How did you choose what to use it and how to explain what happened?
“They were not scoring to make a documentary or movie. It was just a classification of what they were doing, and they recorded nearly 25 hours of shots over those years.”
When they were in the secret apartment, they were there for four years and photographed two or three -quarters of that time with a small consumer camera called Pentax Optio that they bought in Radio Shack for $ 100. It was not a video camera. These were artists who were accustomed to recording what they did. They were not recorded to make a documentary or movie. It was just a classification of what they were doing, and they recorded nearly 25 hours of shots over those years. What they got was just wonderful. It was a stock of everything they were doing in the secret apartment – bringing furniture, infiltration, recording conversations, going to the dining hall, or going to the movie Theater. The coverage was amazing. Besides the secret apartment, they were filming their normal artistic lives. It was an incredible amount of shots. The one warning was that the shots were of low quality in terms of coordination. These were not film cameras. It was worse than the VHS bar. They were challenges and technical problems, but they seized a lot before everyone runs about photographing everything with iPhone devices.
I really like the way the development of the space appears over time, as well as re -create a space for artists to remember their emotions and experiences and re -represent certain scenes. Can you talk about it?
I was looking for ways to deal with the movie in a different way. The same space was very unconventional, and they were really unique artists. A movie about this story is required to embrace unconventional moves and does not feel like it is just another documentary. I invited them to participate in the movie. It is a kind of definition in a way that the film process occurs in the middle of the road. You see an artist who makes a model for the commercial center that becomes a pillar in the movie. Other personalities are involved in rebuilding the area inch. We see it as it happens. I wanted to do entertainment. We had no footage to show the last days of the secret apartment because they stopped filming. I had to discover a way to tell that story and photograph it. Entertainment was a way to do this.
The film deals with sweat and category issues in that all the conspirators were white and had a certain amount of concession. They discuss how they can get rid of security while smuggling them in cement blocks. What do you think of how Townsund is able to get rid of this and get rid of it as long as he did?
“The fact that they were white children in their twenties. If it didn’t seem as if it were not.”
He admits that. It has a great relationship with what they were. The fact that they were eggs in the twenties. If it did not appear as if it was not. What is interesting about the movie’s appearance now, there are all these reflection points. We see things differently now. Sweat is one of them. You can see how they can get rid of this because they are White people are distinguished. We see how this story changed and developed. There are elegant aspects about cities, society and race and smaller details, such as what shopping centers mean and what the private space means. This is now completely different from what was the case when they were doing it in 2003. Another layer adds to it.
One of the artists talks about buying things from the commercial center to supply the house they want to have, instead of the “Sparkling play” group Do Hold. What are your thoughts about the apartment dead as a comment about The aspirations of the ownership of the house?
It was very interesting. Adriana sees the space in her own way and sees Michael one thing, and Cullen sees something else. I started seeing it with all these different ways. Adriana’s entry point was, “I want to create an ideal, ambitious place or space. Furniture by Pottery“This is what she was dealing with, decorating and treating it because it created the space.
Colin Bliss and Greta Sheng in the “Secret Mall Apartment” (with the permission of Michael Townsin)I love the apartment constantly changed and developed. They only put this apartment and live there. One of the artists explained that the secret mall apartment was a way to “perform a lifestyle.” How do you define what Townsund and other artists did? Was the art of performance, or an act of resistance, or an ingenious trick? Does it have a purpose, and should I have? It reminds me of it Pico Air Live in lax.
I think it’s all this and more. I try to remember people as stupid, ridiculous and stupid. These eight people sneak into their local commercial center and find this concrete box and turn it into a secret headquarters, such as the fort or the secret club. In some respects, this is what makes it a Dada for me. You can look at it and there are deep and deep things that can be said about the place that suits it in the history of art and the situation. But also this stupid idea as they evade security to bring a sofa to play PlayStation. I love how it contains the element of humor and ridicule.
Perhaps it is not spoiler to say that Townsund is arrested. What do you think of the punishment he received?
He was banned from the commercial center, and he was not allowed to return. He did not return for 17-18 years. There was a time when he was almost a felony in his record. He understands what he did, takes the punishment and accepted it. We hope that the commercial center will embrace the documentary and see that it is an opportunity to return the Province community to this amazing urban legend.
Will “Secret Mall Apartment” play at the Provence Playon Center?
The commercial center reserved the movie, we are very excited. We kept the film outside Provencen for several months because we wanted to play in the commercial center. It took us a long time to move in it, and now we open at the Provence Playon Center. It’s too dead. The secret apartment is located below the stage and there are scenes in the movie that occurs in the theater of the commercial center.
Do you think the punishment is appropriate for the crime?
Certainly I did. He lived inside the commercial center. Keep a secret apartment. He went to and outside and brought furniture and passed through the doors of the alarm. It was properly banned for 17 years. He didn’t harm anyone, but he became a massive cry for people in Provence. Perhaps there is an argument that the punishment does not deserve the crime.
“Secret Mall Apartment” is opened in selected cities March 21 with more cities and upcoming dates.
