BMW’s next-gen EVs depend on an unassuming black box called ‘Heart of Joy’

Last November, I tied the rear passenger seat to the sedan with four doors with a BMW test driver 24 hours contestant Jeanss Klinsmann Behind the wheel. It was a cold day at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC, and under the five points of the five points, a roll cut, and the body strongly, Klingmann had an unexpected pilot: a small black box called “Heart of Joy”. “

It was a strange name for an interesting set of technical features that operate my trilogy shortcut on the 1.7 -mile performance path. Joy is an interesting future for the German brand that still wants to be known as the “final driving machine” in the electric future.

The car in which we installed the VDX driving experience, is a single -time designed to test this supposed magic black square, as well as more upcoming features of BMW Neue Klasse platform. VDX fans use it to absorb the path to improve the traction force in speed. These fans loudly inside the car, making it almost impossible to hear more than one roar while dealing with the path at speeds approaching 90 miles per hour, although the car itself is mostly silent EV.

In the hands of the skilled klingmann, the tires give up as they are close to limiting their grip. There is no less than the BMW brake bed, as this small black square does the majority of the work while we get to know the path.

The heart of joy is a cash unit of electronic control unit that combines driving dynamics and control of the movement group in one computer. Almost eight inches are eight inchesThe box will be a console for the upcoming NEUE Klasse electrical vehicles, which will start later this year.

It was developed within the company by BMW engineers, which is unique because most manufacturers combine hundreds of ready -made components and write a software code to make them all communicate smoothly with each other. This results in a kind of homogeneity of driving experiences through different brands because most brands use the same suppliers. So, BMW cost its engineers to think about how to distinguish between EVS from competition by reaching a new individual computing system that can operate a variety of driving dynamics via the BMW lineup – from SUVs to sports cars.

“The question is, how does the pleasure of driving in an electric era look like?” Christian Thalir, chief driving dynamic engineer at BMW. “It combines absolute energy with the torque of electric motors, with the ability of these engines to slow down and make the car, and the option to get more than one power source.”

On the path, VDX is a missile, and although we are approaching 90 miles per hour respectively, Klingmann barely touches the brakes and simply raises the accelerator to bring the car to a more rational speed to enter sharp hair.

“The question is, how does the pleasure of driving in an electric era look like?”

BMW did not share all the specifications of the VDX test vehicle, along with a torque of 13269 pounds, an increase of 25 percent in efficiency thanks to the integrated brakes and energy restoration. But they participated that the heart of joy is ten times faster than the electronic transport unit translated in the market.

One of the main features that BMW focused on development was to control braking and stability. The system can actively use the BMW brakes to fully stop the driver without having to touch the pedal. The company says that this feature will lead to more stability in the maximum because the system can break every individual wheel to create a better grip, which leads to a 60 percent more efficient recovery.

Since a single computer system manages everything from driving dynamics to removing power generation into individual wheels, there will be less time in the car’s response, and you will get tired of brakes and tires. Thaalmeer said that the new ECU can transform energy and obedience from front to back and to every wheel to get the maximum stability and stability from the car, an event that he calls “the joy of stopping.”

Heart of Joy has been developed in just three years, and it has now passed by more than 7500 hours of test, both at the hands of experienced engineers such as Thaalmeer and race drivers like Klingmann. The goal, of course, is to get future BMWS to pay more like BMWS, not like, for example, KIAS, which uses the supplier model for their EVS. Also single computer makes the air updates much easier for BMW.

Bringing the development at home is not the new thing for BMW, but it is relatively unique in an industry that is repeatedly looking to external suppliers for everything starting from identifying sound to information and entertainment. ECU tends to use external sources of other companies such as Magna Steyr, for example.

BMW CTO Frank Weber explained how the car industry failed to launch the 7 series 25 years ago gave the company the ability and confidence to create the new Joy heart. “It was a nightmare,” Weber said at CES earlier this year. “We didn’t launch almost the car … Today, I can say, perhaps this was the best thing for BMW. Since it was very difficult, we had to develop more powerful operations for those advanced digital technologies in a time much earlier than others, Then we prepared it over time.

“We didn’t go almost … Today, I can say, perhaps this was the best thing for BMW.”

This prompted the company to believe that it could deal with the difficult task of bringing in the construction of the electronic control unit at home. “The ability to work with controllers is something that people who have already done driving dynamics did for a long time, but they did so with suppliers,” Weber said. “Here, we had knowledge, and we developed algorithms with suppliers … We have to have this, because what we can do with this new control unit, when we look at everything, incredible.”

As Weber noted, there was an increasing boost to give regional character to everything from emissions to resources sources around the world. Cars supplied chains are deeply integrated across the border, and globalization is very difficult and expensive to relax. See the amazing amount of damage that President Trump hurts The proposed definitions of 25 percent can contain US auto manufacturers aloneWith terrible estimates that American car manufacturers can close within a week They should go to their place. As Weber pointed out, the regional that is used to place the borders between countries is something that threatens the entire auto industry. By bringing part of the production of what makes BMW, BMW, at home, the company can, at least in some respects, reduce these risks.

If the exciting and exciting experience that you went through in VDX is any indicator, then the new Joy heart, confirms the “final driving machine” of BMW, the roots and promised the future of the dynamic leadership really.
