Breaking: Kevin Willard reportedly set to leave Maryland for Villanova

Villanova Kevin Williard of Maryland is scheduled to be rented as his main coach, according to the sources of Fox Sports early Sunday morning.

Willard leaves College Park after going 65-38 over the past three seasons with two Terrapins To the first 16 sweet program since 2016. Maryland has fell to Florida, ranked 1, 87-71, on Thursday.

Before arriving in Maryland in 2022, Williad spent 12 years in Big East training in Citton Hall, where he accused the pirates of five NCAA championships in six seasons before leaving to College Park.

Now, Williad will go to the main line to try to re -create what was a former competitor, Jay Wright, rolling in Villanova before Kyle Neptune took over in 2022.

Williad, who has northeast roots, has become separate from the Maryland Sports State Department in recent weeks. The 49 -year -old lead coach recently expressed his frustration with the highest Maryland staff, and after the sports director Damon Ivans left to take the same job in SMU last week, she left the Terrapins Sports section in chaos with Kulin Sorim.

According to the sources, Williard’s relationship with Sorim has been strained in recent months, especially during an exchange in December when Sorem did not allow the team to stay in New York City to spend an additional night during the holiday season.

“The loss of the sports director was a little difficult, to be honest,” Williad said in a radio interview on “Kevin Sheehan Show” on Wednesday. “I didn’t expect Damon to leave SMU. But I was working with him [Maryland Deputy Athletic Director/Chief Strategy Officer] Brian Oman and everyone in the department, and they were great.

“I don’t want huge things. I just want this program to be the best.” “I do not ask about it a lot. I don’t want someone to tell me that we will do it – I want it in my contract. I do not want people to make decisions about my program who do not participate in my program. These are adults for me. I live it, I breathe it, every day. This fans’ base expects it, but this place did not treat this path for a long time. My goal is to get it.”

Sources told Fox Sports to Fox SPORTS that Maryland has prepared a financial package to make Williad one of the top 10 coaches paid in America. But this step was a family decision to be near his former home in New Jersey and that the king be in a school that gained great respect in his big east days – Villanova.
