Duke faces its biggest challenge yet under Jon Scheyer

Given the current university basketball situation, it seems that phrases such as “keeping the list” and “the continuity of culture” are present everywhere for years to come as a safe bet as is the case.
For Duke, the brand is still the most rude in sport, both goals achieved some somewhat easily in the first return of John Sher at the head.
After the 2022-23 season included ACC Championship The tournament, the Blue Devils team was the only energy conference team in this sport that did not lose one player for the transport gate. A year later, after running to Elite Eight, Duke lost seven players in The Portal, a fact that a recruitment category from the highest classification and the return of players like Tyroese Proctor and Caleb Foster who have already worked as two major shareholders of Scheyer.
Shaer also managed to avoid losing the essence of his employees, as Chris Carwell and Jay Lucas Jay Lucas sit next to the bench during the first three years of the trip. All of this changed when Lucas was appointed to be the new coach in Miami, and he made the extraordinary decision to leave Duke after the end of the normal season.
After the departure of Lucas, The Blue Devils has passed to the ACC championship title, moved to the East Regional Championship, and then seemed ready to get around a place in the national championship game. Instead, the team wins two away from consolidating a place among the greatest history of basketball in the college will now be remembered forever, at least largely, because it is The collapse of the end of the game against Houston.
In a place like Duke, this is not the type of Poltergeist that can be abandoned by lower means. It will take it the Earn on Monday night in April because there were no whispers about Siree for a great coach in the game, to be in his head or not being the right option to replace the greatest side line in the history of university basketball that disappears forever … at least to settle for a few years.
The fourth year also feels the most distinguished test of Sayer to date in his continuous endeavor to fill the largest shoes.
On the one hand, Scheyer did not again lose one grant player at the transport portal. On the other hand, he will be asked to replace all five beginners – the American Professional League Coper Flagg, Kon Knuepet, Khaman Maluach and Tyrest Proctor, as well as Sion James – for the first time since he took over in Durham.
While Shayer has cleared many bars in his first three seasons, this new situation will provide the 37 -year -old opportunity to answer a pair of new questions.
Can it really evolve?
If Duke again will be in the national title mix in 2026, it will have to a handful of players last season to develop into basic shareholders. If not players such as Foster (5.1 PPG), Evans (6.8 PPG) and Patrick Nagunga II (3.9 PPG) are not ready for the presence or near the team’s heart ready to conduct another four finals next March, people will ask about the reason for not.
Can it make it work with transportation as a basic star?
There is no reason to believe that the next novice Cameron Bozer will be less than exciting for the next season. But there is a difference between the “normal beginner” and “Cooper Flagg Sensation”. This means that Boozer will need some backup in the stars section.
The most equipped player to deal with this role is Cedric Coward, who will reach Durham-assuming that he eventually plays an early jump to the American Professional League-to Durham Washington State. Coward played only six games with Cougars last season, but it reached average of 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 blocks in the 55.7 percent game of the ground. He is a scorer of three levels and a polished cannons; Specifically, the Duke type is necessary to assemble another young menu.
Coward can also end as one of the best stories in the total basketball season 2025-26. The player who started his university career at Williamit University in the third department ends by helping the storm Blue Duke Devils Running in a national championship is a story that does not need a lot of additional details.
But can you make it a job?
He has achieved success in transfers by-Sion James and was the fourth top scorer last season after playing four years in Tolin-but Shayer never depended on the production of the new expatriate expatriate as it seems that he would need to be with Kanward this season. If it succeeds, the door can open for a new Scheyer’s list of Scheyer to go forward.
After all, everyone in sports is still “adjusting and trying to discover the best way to do this.”
“I feel that my biggest job is to build the menus,” said Shayer again in March. “This has always been great in university basketball, but especially now. When we won (the national championship) in 2010, I played the five beginning in 100 games together. You won’t get it now. So for us, the appropriate free players who balance each other – but most importantly, motivated them and who are people.”
Of course, making all these decisions and decisions is not the function of one man.
Lucas has played a key role in helping Scheyer to attract the best young talent in this sport to Durham over the past three years. While Shayer managed to maintain a blue bars, Lucas fluctuated his five -star colleague Shelton Henderson, who will come with South Beach.
In charge of making his first assistant assistant in Duke within two years, Sher took some of the unconventional path. To fill the role that Lucas left behind, Shayer Ivan Brads, who recently worked as a coach to develop players in Utah Jazz. After his career in playing in Palmont, Prads jumped immediately to the world of training with a work period as an assistant with Boston Celkus Before moving to Salt Lake City in 2022, he never trained at the college level.
Unlike the past two seasons, the Dukes do not count the start of the 2025-26 season in or near the top of the list of teams that are expected to reduce the net in April. This fact, along with other important changes that occur in Durham, provide Scheyer with an opportunity.
Pass it with airline colors, and the surrounding conversation with the director of the three disappointing NCAA championships will be disappointed, respectively. The struggle, and … well, and everyone else knows the rest.
Does any of this exhibition for a person who has a total number 89-22, four ACC championships and eight NCAA championships win three seasons? Of course not. But nothing about replacing Mike Kerzivski will be fair.
