FedEx flight catches fire after colliding with bird during takeoff from Newark airport

A FEDEX cargo plane traveled from Newark to Indianapolis a bird while taking off on Saturday morning, according to officials.

The Federal Aviation Department said in a statement that Fedex Flight 3609 hit the bird while it was leaving, destroying one of the Boeing 767 engines.

The plane re -landed at Newark Liberty International Airport at approximately 8:07 am, according to the New York Port Authority and New Jersey. No injuries were reported.

“The B767 crew announced an emergency and returned safely to Newark after dealing with the resulting engine damage, including the engine fire.”

The plane was disabled on a runway at the airport, and FAA is investigating the accident.
