How I learned to ‘be more horse’ on a wild Sussex retreat | Travel

S.NA FARM in West Sussex, I stand next to the handsome Irish -Irish Cos. Jenny is close to 16 hands, with full feather legs, which is flowing mane and gentle behavior. I am completely cautious about the horses, but as I watch her stomach slowly expands while breathing, and I notice her long eyelashes and velvety nose, I feel relaxed and completely relaxed.

I am in Westerlands, a renewable farm at Graffham, in the National Downs National Park, for a successive experience to length, staying in a new cabin and taking samples from the “Fearstrian Wellness” session. It is managed by the stable and behavioral manager, ELLY MEDLETON, with the Gemma Peterson coach, the monthly workshop provides people with an opportunity to spend time with horses, slow and recharge (can be designed and reserved separately, too).

“We can learn a lot of horses,” Eli says. “They are very vigilant and intuitive masters,” says Eli. “The ethics of the farm all revolves around healing in nature. The presence with a horse can have therapeutic benefits, and we teach us luxury techniques, such as how we are at the present time.”

The two -hour session begins with breathing and meditation and the session led by Gima, before we meet horses and they are encouraged to communicate with “touch, feeling and smell”. While I stand quietly next to Jenny, hit her neck, bend her head towards me – and I feel myself physically relaxed and still is my mind. It is a simple but strange experience. We finish the restogenic yoga with open fire and I am practically returned to a cabin.

A previous farm for the RaceHorm (and a seasonal dowry death), and Westerlands has owned the Jamison family since the 1980s. In recent years, it has begun to move to a “regenerative farm”, which was able to do so for nature, with the aim of increasing biological diversity and environmental protection. It is a largely family affair, with Antonia Jameson and her husband, Oliver, at the head, alongside Emma’s sisters (an artist sharing a studio here with their mother, Pamela, also a painter) and a tendency (a herbaceous world that directs walking in the search for feed).

The family has the adjacent lands on the top of landing, including the natural reserves run by Grafham Download. On the border with South Download, it is a magic extension of chalk and forests, with the Uz model, and the promoter and panoramic views of the sea. Everything is part of Weald to the waves An initiative to create a 100 -miles a corridor through the Sussex from the high WeALD to the coast.

To restore the health of the soil, the number of sheep and livestock on the farm is limited, and only eight horses remain at the Equestrian Center for Experiences of Flight and Delivery of Horses. Beekeeping (honey for sale), and the cultivation of edible hedge and re -guidance among the restoration plans, as well as hosting events and encouraging visitors to explore.

Antonia says: “We are on a large journey to restore the land and create a society, and give more opportunities to people to communicate with nature,” says Antonia. “By giving space to nature, we have seen a lot of changes in a short time, with more insects and life of birds already. Westerlands is a place of peace, and we want to be accessible to everyone.”

Participants are encouraged to “touch horses and feel”

Counter to New Model is an increasing set of accommodations, from cabins and rural homes to converted barns. Woodfire Campsite She works from one of the fields, with her outdoor kitchen, which creates delicious common meals that all guests can join.

It was established in the latest cabin – the country of wood – in its vast field. The cabin is sustainable with local wood, and sleeps four years outside the network, with views of the sweeping countryside and an outdoor covered bath (The Download is a dark reserve of the sky and there is a telescope for rental for the net nights as well).

This is a beautiful part of the world, with abundant aspects and wonderful bars (duncton cricket players). The pedestrian paths lead to Graffham Village, the Lavington Commun Nature Reserve reserve to the north, and PetWorth reserve 10 minutes by car, and EBIKES can be set to explore more. But I do not venture as much as it should be done on the farm.

After coffee in Horsebox Cafe (in an Ateeq horse box that was operated by Emma), I go to Wildspa, a modern addition with Sauna and Booting Flung in a private garden, and to the rose room in a seventeenth century cottage to treat the opposite with Louise (the scope of treatment from Reiki to the life coach). He is happy. There is also an outdoor green gym, with regular lessons from circuit to kettlebells (and the option to reserve private classes, from yoga to resistance training).

The horses are located in the heart of Westerlands and the next morning Jenny reunited a trip through the farm and the countryside. The cyclists of all levels and ages are met for (three is the minimum age), while non -viewers can subscribe to horse contact sessions for 45 minutes. The owners can even bring their horses on a vacation. I had not installed for a while, but it was pleasure to be broken through the forests in the sun’s rays.

Returning to the stables, learn about medicinal herbs, horses are feed and see “Herb Cafe”, where they choose the plants who need prosperity. “The horses have the ability to get to know what they need for therapeutic purposes,” Elie explains, “for example, the lemon conditioner for antihistamines, and rodette for the joints. It is attracted to what they need.”

Salam Westerlands soon works its magic and leaves a feeling of renewal and inspiring the transformation that occurs. I remember the teachings from the workshop – the benefits of slowdown and be more present – and the words of Elly’s advice in my mind: “Basically, be more horse.” I think this will be my logos from now on.

The trip was provided before Westerlands. Shepherd (Sleeping Four) costs of 75 pounds per night; Wood country (Four) from 139 pounds sterling Night. Gather, think, communication Horse connection workshops cost 49 pounds for two hours. Radiator From 35 pounds for 30 minutes

Escape: Tips for New passengers

Jin is ready to ride on Jenny

2 Be honest about your passenger experience. A good center will match you with the right horse.

3 keep calm. Many people reach a state of excess, but staying calm and calm is the best approach.

4 Get close to the horse on the shoulder and its space; It is a partnership, it will work together.

5 Wearing reasonable and weather suitable such as the arms or the bottom of the tracking clothes, no short trousers, jacket tops or covers. The shoes should be in Jodhpur or riding shoes, with flat and small heels, not coaches. Always wear a riding helmet and high jacket.

6 Sit deep into the saddle with a straight back and relax the legs. The goal is to activate the nucleus while maintaining the shoulders and hips. It should be in a line from the shoulder to the thigh to the heel. This helps you balance so that the horse can move well. Pressure from the lower calves to go forward.

7 Be soft with matters because it calls directly to the mouth of the horse. Keep the shoulders soft and hands relax. If you cannot stay comfortable in the arms and hands, have the front of the saddle.
