Washington, DC, Like a lot in the capital of the country, the John F. Kennedy for theatrical arts in a state of uncertainty. Enter Mark Morris. It was cruel along what was going on in his mind, unlike the descent of the moon and the golden record, the disk that the astronomer and media personality Karl Sagan for Voyageer 1 and 2. “MON”, a series of short dances that last less than an hour, begins with a five -point stars in a semicircle on a screen that was a background for Eisenhower. The stars are accurately the vicinity of the American presidential seal. But instead of leading to anger, a picture of JFK appeared below the seal, then one of the moon. The audience laughed and then applauded warmly.
Morris Silver was the place of ambiguity and wonder. The musical options were strange. Besides Golden Record in many languages for foreigners, Morris converts the glorious Schmaltzy Swing, Bluevras and rural recordings of “thirties” and “forties and fifties”. These included “Roll Adly, Prairie Moon”, “Blue Moon Blue Moon of Kentucky”, “Dark Moon” from Bonnye Guitar and Hildgarde “Honey-Colored Moon”. The pianist and player Colin Fowler, who was joined by guitarist Jordan Fraser, added their contributions from the hole. A few exotic piano numbers appeared in György Ligeti from “Musica Ricercata”. Dancers rolled on stools with wheels like Little Space People to some of Marcel Dupré “24 inventions for members”.
Through the wonderful impressionist lighting (by Mike Faba), exciting outer space expectations (by Windle K. Harrington), elegant costumes (by Isaac Mizihai), and became a few space men spread in Washington. Most of all, his company was not better than ever, and the dancers themselves presented the real imagination. The movement of the other world in one way or another matches different music in ways that appear rational but not logically. The movement, itself, was an adventure, about each new, initial surprise turn.
Walking at the Kennedy Center can recently feel risky. But noting his program, Morris asks us to “monitor and enjoy the moon, space, without understanding anything.” However, the genius of the “moon” is to remind us that wonder can be around the less expected angles.
Can “the moon” mention NASA by going to the moon to ask, not looting? Maybe not. But artists can mention that if the “moon” is important, so the Kennedy Center still has to nourish and produce such work.
In the wake of the three Kennedy Center offers, “Moon” will be visible in the coming seasons on parts of America, including southern California, where Morris has a large and favorite position in many places. (The head of the broad stage in Santa Monica came to the capital for the first show.)
Kennedy Center, please, before it is too late, stop, reflect and recharge. America needs you. And you, if you decide to understand something or two, you will need us.
