How to make sure you can fly after the REAL ID deadline arrives

As of today, May 7, 2025, it will be the only long -awaited true identity requirements throughout the United States.
After years of delay and expectation of installation, travelers must now show a A driver’s license compatible with identityFederally approved passport or federal form to identify local flights or enter some federal facilities.
The rush has led to the upper dmvs, long lines and a lot of confusion about what is already required, especially among retired military members.
Farid from Oklahoma summarized the concerns that many feel in a modern email message to us.
“With the deadline on the seventh of May for every person approaching a real identifier, it may be time to do a story about the potential impact on Retired. Once again in April 2024, I made the story of many of us nervous or angry. There appears to be some defects in the TSA program, which reads the “unspecified” expiration date. Those more than 65 of us have an endless retired identifier.
“I suggest that the solution of TSA no longer accepts our identification as an alternative form of the real identifier. It anger us because our identification allows access to military facilities, but we are not allowed to fly? In any case, there was no follow -up article saying either a stable defect or rejects the radical solution … Perhaps you can shed some light on this.”
Let’s dismantle what has been changed, answer a unique question and wander exactly how to get a real identification if you still need one.
What is the real identifier and why is it required now?
The real knowledge law was approved in 2005 to enhance the security standards of the state’s identifiers, after recommendations from the September 11 Committee. Starting today, anyone must 18 or larger show a A driver’s license compatible with identity or state identifier (Look for a star in the upper corner), a valid passport or any form of identity approved by TSA on local trips or access to some federal buildings. If you do not have one of these, you may be removed in the security of the airport, even if you have used your current identification for years.

Are retired military identifiers still working at TSA checkpoints?
Sarah news to Farid and other retired military personnel: The Ministry of Defense’s identifiers, including joint access cards, unified service identity cards, retired cards, and older family members, are still acceptable by TSA for local Travel flight. This includes cards with “Indef” expiration dates (unlimited), despite the imbalance in the past and the defects in the programs.
However, travelers reported crosses in some airports, as the TSA system may offend reading an “unlimited” date at the end of its validity. In these cases, TSA employees may request another acceptable form of the identifier, such as a real identity or passport license. If you do not have another identifier, the supervisor may review your document and allow you to follow up, but expect possible delays.
The bottom line is that retired military cards and approved identity cards remain valid for locally, starting today. If you have faced problems in the past, it is wise to bring a backup form of identity if possible.

What happens if you don’t have a real identifier yet?
If you appear at the airport today with a standard driving license that is not compatible with the identity, and you do not have another passport or an accredited identifier, you can face the delay or additional examination, or until the entry is refused at the security checkpoint. TSA urges travelers to check an identity identification before heading to the airport.
However, if you have a valid global entry card, then you do not need to obtain a real driving license that is compatible with the identity to fly locally after May 7, 2025. The World Entry Card is a reliable traveler card by the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS) that meets federal identity standards and is explicitly accepted by TSA as an alternative to the real knowledge. This means that you can use the World Entry Card at TSA checkpoints to check your identity when flying in the United States. Other trusted traveler cards are also accepted, such as Nexus, Sentri and Fast, as alternatives.
important: Although the World Entry Card is officially acceptable, some travelers have reported accidental confusion between TSA agents. To avoid delay, consider carrying an additional form of identity, such as an American passport or a passport card.
Using your World Entry Card, you can go beyond the need to visit DMV to get a real identifier and still corresponds to the requirements of the local air travel.

What if you have a passport?
An American passport or a valid passport card is always accepted. If you have one, you do not need a real ID to fly, but you will need it for federal facilities that require a real identifier to enter.
