The Evolution of Dance Theatre of Harlem

From the beginning, the dancing theater in Harlem History was a course of struggle and victory. Founded by dancer Arthur Mitchell in 1969, in response to the assassination of Martin Luther King Junior, the company flourished, until she did not, and forced to close, in 2004, nearly a decade ago. In 2012, Virginia Johnson, a former DTH member, one of the great American ballet dancer in the 1970s and eighties, re -revived it, with grace and care, the company returned to stability. Two years ago, DTH delivered to Robert Garland, who spent, like Johnson, his entire career there, first as a dancer, and then as a teacher and dance designer. Garland knows the company inside and outside, and knows what dancers can on, and how to push it towards it.

This year, the company’s season, in the city center (10-13 April), includes work by William Forseth, a dance designer, in the late 1990s, and ballet technology expanded to the extreme, which increased the edge of risks and supreme. The work, “The Vertiginous Thrill of Excludure”, from 1996, is one of the most famous. It also suggests its title, it is the ballet that fills everything that the art and dancers can achieve: lightning speed, the accuracy of the edge of the knife, the wide material extent, and strict engineering, as well as the ability to distort these geometric shapes at the will. FORSYTHE relied on George Palnchin’s innovations, whose work was included in the DTHL DNA for more than a decade. So it makes sense for Balanchine to appear in this season, in the form of “Donizetti Variations”, a work that combines brilliance with gastric bouquet. It is Garland, whose dances are a way to celebrate the individual company’s artists, and a new work, “The Cookout”, who was previously appointed to music, among other things, Neo-Soul Jill Scott and Funk Band Cymande.-Marina Hares

One does not need to have synesthesia to experience color in Schumann- only at the opening of the Concerto Piano A-MINOR, we go from the sharp crimson to deep maroon seminars. It is appropriate that the composer be displayed in Met’s “Sight and sound”, A lecture and performance series. In order to associate with the exhibition “Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature”, it highlights the Schumann symphony. He wrote after the composer was transferred to Düsseldorf, and the piece is characterized by almost popular pastoral seeds planted by its new surroundings. The historian and historian of Lyon Poittein leads reflections on these artists and the symbiotic relationship of their artistic forms, with the music performed by the orchestra now.Jane Boa (Metropolitan Museum of Arts; April 13.)
