Logan: A woman exchanges bodies with a chair, and everyone likes her better as a chair. Writer-director Amanda Kramer deftly mines literature, film, and performance art to cleverly poke the piss at the shared social scripts people use to convince themselves they have a life full of purpose when they don’t. By design It tells the story of Camille (Juliet Lewis), a woman who struggles with friendships with women (Samantha Mathis and Robin Toone) who use her to talk about themselves.

Key quotes:

“When I was young, I would watch people, and I felt emotionally connected to the desire to disappear into something other than myself, completely, and a feeling that was like love. But there’s also this vaporizing — I don’t know if Vapid is an ugly word — but that’s where we start.” And it made me cry when I read it, it was so poetic for me I’d also been doing other jobs that were very heavy, where the character wasn’t the thing, and so it was so fun to get into Amanda’s movie. Kramer: It’s a painted world. It was like walking down the yellow brick road to Oz, this is the land I feel we were in.” -Juliet Lewis
