The applicants said: “They are the only well -known examples of the punishment of peaceful demonstrators, in which no reduction was at all for such a motive.”

Danny Friedman KC said that the rulings that were handed over to four activists organized the road barrier protests on the M25 “higher of their kind in modern British history”, while others were “much longer than one’s expectation.”

He added: “If these provisions are allowed to appeal to stand … it will constitute a model in this field of criminal law.”
