Kadir Nelson’s “Major Taylor, a Champion Who Led the Way”

For the cover of June 2, 2025, the artist Kadir Nelson Marshall W (Major) Taylor leads a bicycle show of past and current ages. Nelson said: “I wanted to build the most famous bicycle in the nineteenth century-the first African American star in any sport-and the epic event of six-day interior bikes in 1896 in Madison Square Garden’s Velodrome, where Taylor competes.” Despite Taylor’s admiration during his era, as “the fastest man in the world”, he also faced a lot of racism and aggression throughout his career; He had left his bike and suffocated by a white contestant. In December 2023, a draft law was presented to grant Taylor to the Gold medal in Congress in the US House of Representatives.
