Les Squires obituary | Materials science

My friend Les Squares, who died at the age of 76, was a scientific specialist in unseen fabrics. He developed many materials and fabrics for medical uses, hygiene, insulation, agricultural uses and construction.
After a long period of search for Chemicals Johnson & Johnson, in the late 1970s, he created a company called Web Dynamics with a friend, Tim Woodbridge, to make new materials. They opened a factory near Bolton in Lancashire, and although they had some frightening times with the volatility of the economy, they persevered and eventually became very successful, as they opened a second factory in China.
Behind him, behind the gentle and humble outer surface, he had an inner essence of steel, and in his career he will not be taken for a fool, and he will not return away from the challenge. He was one of the most diligent and comprehensive people of all the people I met.
He was born in Withincho in ManchesterHe had the first child to Bill, a post office official, and Joan (Ni Rart). After he failed in the 11 plus, he left Charston Secondary Secondary School to work in Manchester for Gigi (later CIBA-EGIGY) as a laboratory technician, using his time there to study HNC and HND qualifications.
When his girlfriend, Jean -Loton, went to the University of Leeds to study English literature, he visited her there, and decided that if she and her friends managed to obtain a certificate, she would be able to. After obtaining other qualifications, it was accepted on a degree in color chemistry in Leeds, where we met, and stayed at a doctorate degree in polymer chemistry, followed by a Master of Business Administration at Dundy University.
After she got married from Jean in 1973, it was the first job in LES postgraduate with Johnson & Johnson in Gargrev, north of Yorkshire, where he joined a team that develops healthy and medical materials including wound dressings. His promotion was transferred to Portsmouth in Hambeshire before moving in 1990 to work in a different company, without And And -Luvar in Scotland, where he patented many unseuded fabrics for use in construction and agriculture before creating web dynamics in 1997.
Les retired in 2018. He loved the open air, and I was often walking and climbing in North Wales and Scotland. He was also interested in gardening and household wine, and two of us played folk and classic music together, with Les on Boards and ME on the violin.
He survived Jean and their children, Andrew and Nile, the grandchildren of Ben and Alice and his sister Janet.
