Mexico Reaches Gold Cup Knockout Round After Beating Suriname on Montes’ Brace

Defender Cesar Montes scored twice in a six-minute period in the second half, and the Mexico champion struggled early, but he managed to overcome Surinam 2-0 on Wednesday evening to secure a place in the CONCACAF GOLD Cup.
Montess opened the scoring at the head of a corner kick in 57 and added another goal in the 63rd minute of the Mexicans, who defeated the Dominican Republic 3-2 in the opening match of the tournament.
With three goals in the championship, the 28 -year -old defender, who plays with Lokomotiv of Moscow, is currently the score with Costa Rica Manfred Oglid.
“I am enthusiastic about the goals, but the priority is to maintain a clean paper. It is clear that I did not imagine it; this is what the attackers deserve, but as long as I can help the team this way, I will do it,” Montess said.
Montes scored only once in his 53rd national matches before the Gold Cup, in a friendly match against Panama in June 2021.
With victory, Mexico will lead Group A with six points and Costa Rica will play next Sunday in Las Vegas aimed at securing first place before the second round.
