MLS news: Sounders’ Stefan Frei provides health update after scary collision

Seattle Soundarrs Goalkeeper Stefan Free was removed from the stadium in an ambulance during Sunday match against the Columbus crew after a scary collision.

In the midst of a 1-1 match, free jumped to play in a free kick. While he came down, his head collided with The knee of the crew player. Free fell to the ground and the players around him and his immediate help.

Brian Schmitzers, Sonders coach, said he was alert while he was leaving the field. It is evaluated for head and neck injuries.

“His fingers were moving, so he was fine in this regard. No paralysis, nothing big, but it is clear that I do not want to underestimate it.”

Wilfred Nancy, Schmitzer’s coach and coach of the referees, appealed to stop the match. Nancy was praised for getting the match for the match even with Columbus giving a corner kick in the last moments.

The goalkeeper wrote on social media on Monday that he returned home.

Frei wrote on X: “I am still trying to find out what happened at the end of the game, but I am incredibly grateful to all the employees who took me and happy to return home now.

“What echo is all the messages, calls and love that you received from many of you.”
