Relax guidance for meat three times a week in English schools, says charity | School meals

However, the food institution calls for relaxation, and increased fruit consumption must be encouraged by a specific strategy. The charity also calls for strengthening government purchases for schools and other public places in which food is provided, by reviewing government guidance.

“It is worrying that children eat a lot of processed meat, especially in schools, where meals should be nutritious,” said Rebecca Toby of the Food Foundation.

“The government must review the standards that buy the government for food and school standards to ensure its compatibility with the latest health and sustainability recommendations. This includes relaxation in the base that requires schools to serve meat three times a week and reduce the amount of processed meat provided.

A government spokesman said: “Through our plan for change, this government is determined to give every child the best start in life, which includes creating a healthy generation of children in our history,” a government spokesman said.

“For this reason, we deal with stakeholders in school food standards to ensure that schools are available for children with food options and healthy drink.

“On a broader scale, we are urgently dealing with the childhood obesity crisis by converting our focus from treatment to prevention, including by limiting the access of schoolchildren to fast food.”
