‘Super exciting’ visit of dolphins to East River offers hope of cleaner New York | New York

WNavy experts said that New York Canon was planting with two dolphins in the East River in the city earlier this month. But also a sign that this spring and summer season can be good to discover more marine, wonderful and small.

On the morning of February 14, a pair of short short dolphins was seen alongside Manhattan. The experts who followed that they were remaining until February 17, swimming up and down the rapid flow channel that divides Manhattan from the town in Queens and Brooklyn and lined with skyscrapers.

Jtham Will, a researcher and spokesman for Gotham Will, said to the busy manual highway that runs along the coastal line.

He added: “We take these things with salt beads, especially when there are no pictures, so I went out there and was able to see this husband from dolphins and spent the whole day there.”

According to Sant Lawrence, short short dolphins are not a species that residents usually sees in the internal waterways of New York City. “This is a type we see here in New York throughout the year, but it is usually found outside … so it is very exciting that there is a possibility to reach people.”

The two may have been following dinner.

“There are certainly some fish resources there … It has been noted that the two who were monitored are playing and may know … they are definitely eating smaller educational fish in that area,” said Maxine Montello, Executive Director of the New York Maritime Rescue Center.

Describing the material differences between short short dolphins and gunbags, which are usually discovered from local beaches, Saint Lawrence said the most obvious sign of previous species was the yellow sandy clock along its sides.

“It is super, very distinct. The bottle is all gray with a white abdomen but these shared dolphins have yellow flashing on its side. The shared dolphins are very fun, so when they jump from water, you can see that yellow clearly clearly.”

With reports on the two -weekend duo, Saint Lawrence said that the biggest reaction by Gotham Hout was worried about the people who wondered whether the dolphins were fine.

“We have seen dolphins and other marine life in some of these contaminated channels, then they ended up to death, and people were concerned about the occurrence of these animals in the eastern river,” St. Lawrence explained: “But the experts have showed that the eastern river is now cleaner than it was It is in a century.

Noting the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the 1972 clean water law The drain regulates Among the water pollutants throughout the United States, St. Lawrence said: “These environmental regulations cleaned the waterways in our city, allowing things like fish to marine mammals to enter this water and survive.”

Dolphins are not the only unusual marine visitors.

Last November, the Hadba whale was made appearance In the eastern river below the Brooklyn Bridge, which reflects the increasing number of whales views made throughout the city in recent years.

When Wathham Whales first began documenting the scenes in 2011, marine experts were only able to document five whales that year. However, in 2024, experts identified about 160 individual whales in the New York City area, Saint Lawrence said.

“Last season was to set the record in our hump, so it looks good for this year,” said Saint Lawrence.

“This is all a kind of positive signs, perhaps how our waters allow these animals to go to areas that may have been less perfect since several satellites,” said Montello.

In addition to the clean water law, Montello referred to the Naval Mamrus Protection Law, which provides federal protection for marine mammals by banning, seizing and harassing fishing.

For Montello, the group “really enhances the protection of resources and animals, to increase these population and protect these population until we see it on a greater basis.”

Montello said there was an element of climate. She said: “In the positive field, we know that climate change and the increase in warmer water can expand animal lands, indicating animals that we do not see usually come to our waters.” She added, on the negative side, there may also be “an increase in the spread of viruses and other elements of that measurement because more animals may overlap [territorially] This was not originally, due to this type of effect of climate change. “

However, dolphins and whales are still threatened with local plastic pollution.

“Plastic and digestion are a problem for marine mammals in our region,” said St. Lawrence.

“What we are trying to share with people is that the city and wildlife can advance together and … make this link between the city and our surroundings. Saint Lawrence said:“ New York is a series of islands in the Atlantic Ocean and people do not know that, ”adding:“ Our mission. .. is to make people realize that we are not only the city of the ocean, but we are near a great vitage. “
