Meta expands Instagram restrictions that prevent minors from exposure to inappropriate contact and content, bringing this protection to Facebook and Messenger and adding new boundaries to adolescent Instagram users.
Facebook and Messenger Teen accounts are launched in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada starting today, with other areas coming “soon”, according to Meta. The company did not specify the protection that will be applied, but if it matches the teenage Instagram account, changes will automatically need new and current accounts for users under the age of 18. The older teenagers can disable this protection, but those under the age of 16 will need to request parental permission through supervisory tools to make any changes.
The current teenage account protection includes restrictions on correspondence and interactions with strangers, and more strict controls to see sensitive content. Adolescents are also encouraged to spend more time in a non -connection mode with 60 -minute timeline reminders and a smoke that penetrates the notifications between 10 pm and 7 in the morning. These features are part of Meta’s efforts to address criticism about the child’s safety on its platforms. Facebook and Instagram are currently under investigation into the European Union On concerns about protecting minors, with separate The American lawsuit was filed in 2023 After accusing Mita of creating a “predatory animal market in search of children.”
Meta also adds additional protection to the Teen accounts on Instagram “in the next two months”, which prevents minors from starting a live broadcast or disrupting the feature that blur the pictures in DM when the nudity is discovered. Less than 16 years will require parental permission to change or remove these new Instagram restrictions, which are designed to reduce communication between children and strangers on the platform.
