The first big campaign test of the Trump-Musk era is here

The first major elections since President Donald Trump’s victory in 2024-Willon Musk arrived is the forefront and the center.
Voters in Wisconsin, one of the most battlefields in the country, will decide on April 1 whether the state’s Supreme Court will have a liberal or conservative majority. The non -partisan race technically turned into the battle of a high -risk party agent with national repercussions. The race attracted record sums of money and resources, as the lion’s share of Mr. Musk, who recently said that the race could “decide the fate of the country.”
At this point, at least, Democrats are largely agreed. They gave the race as an early test of their ability to defend their democracy from the Trump administration’s assault – and sought to use Mr. Musk’s heavy participation to stimulate their base.
Why did we write this
The state’s Supreme Court races usually receive attention – but in this battlefield, with a congress map at stake, the risks are great for both sides. Tuesday in Wisconsin will also be a major early test for the party.
“The Wisconsin Supreme Court is the first test since November, whether Musk and Trump can buy American democracy-or whether people who believe that the country should not only work for extreme right-wing billionaires, can showcase a mat and fight.”
Whoever wins the race between the liberal judge Suzanne Croford and the conservative judge Brad Shemel, the former public lawyer of the Republicans, will give their team a majority in the Supreme Court in Wisconsin – and the authority to define some of the main cases that extend to a large extent in Wisconsin.
President Trump supported the campaign of Mr. Shimel last Friday, a step that the strategists have long said on both sides, which did not happen for decades, if any. Mr. Trump Attack Judge Croford on the social truth in the name of “the voicing of the Khreis leftists who go out to destroy your country and our country,” warns that if it wins, “the movement to restore our nation will go beyond Weskonen.”
One of the higher issues – that Mr. Musk cited as a reason for his great spending – is whether the congress map in Wisconsin is still in place. Republicans currently occupy six out of eight seats in the House of Representatives in a state of divided equally between the two parties, due to the map of Congress drew by the state republics. If this map is canceled by the liberal majority court, a new map can help identify any party that wins the control of the House of Representatives in 2026.
“These elections will affect every person in the United States,” said Mr. Musk during a weekly weekend conversation with Judge Shimail.
Early bell
Political repercussions can feel closer to 2026. Politicians of both parties are often monitored by Judicial races in Wisconsin as an early bell. So far, Republican lawmakers have been very hesitant in separating with Mr. Trump and Mr. Musk as two inclined federal programs and expelled tens of thousands of federal workers. But the loss in one of the most important conflicts of battles in the country can give them some incentives to rethink their strong approach – and may slow the agenda of Mr. Trump in Congress.
On the contrary, if Democrats are not able to win in Wisconsin when the wind is on their backs, this is a very fateful sign of their party.
Democrats usually outperform Republican performance in non -secret elections during the Trump era. Since their electoral alliance has turned into very educated voters and very participants, they have achieved the best in the low turnout elections. In 2023, when the Wisconsin Supreme Court control was at the stake in another race She turned into an agent on miscarriageThe liberal judge, Janet Protassific, won 11 points.
This race was, at the time, more expensive and became difficult in the history of the state. But the high risk race is now being seduced by this one. Early voting turnout increased by approximately 50 % of this point in the 2023 race, according to the Wisconsin Elections Committee.
The two sides have already spent more than $ 80 million together, and a total is spent on the right track to exceed $ 100 million. This is the twice the cost of approximately 2023 race – and is more spoken with the cost of Senate and Ruler’s races.
Strategists on both sides say that Judge Krufford has achieved the initiative – but the race has recently tightened as Mr. Musk and other conservatives increased their spending. The consensus is that the elections will be close, although most of them expect Judge Kruvord to have the edge.
Television ads focused largely on law and order issues, as both other sides are drawn as soft on the crime.
“I think the race will reach where people stand on crime cases,” says Republican in Wisconsin Jalalin Jarwam.
A referendum on Trump and Musk?
But both sides were increasingly treating the race as a referendum on Mr. Trump and Mr. Musk. The Democratic Party attacks Mr. Musk in mail and digital ads targeting its main voters, and in recent days TV attack ads were launched Focus on it. Judge Shimel The latest television advertisement It focuses on Mr. Trump’s support. The MUSK Group, which is largely invested in field operations, said that its goal is to transform more Trump voters more than the 2023 race.
Mr. Musk is not the only large donor. Democratic Governor JB Pritzker gave the Democratic Party in Wisconsin $ 500,000 to the race, and the Democrat Megadonor George Soros took $ 1 million. Names of the marquees have stumbled for both judges, including Donald Trump Junior for Judge Shimel, the governor of Minnesota Tim, and to Judge Krufford.
But nearly half of the money on the side of the Republican Party came from Mr. Musk, who decreased about $ 18 million in the campaign, between a direct donation of two million dollars of the Republican Wisconsin party, more than $ 8 million from America Back Super Back, and led a lot in TV reservation to build the future of America, launched another group last year.
In a recent note, the prominent future adviser in America Andrew Romeo said that the late flood of supporting spending helped to bridge a large gap in the race. “There is more work to be done if Schimel is to get rid of what could be a historical disorder, but we believe that we are in the margin of error,” books.
Mr. Musk’s American PAC also offers $ 100 to any Weslevan voter signs a petition that opposes “active judges”-a way to collect conservative voters’ data for the exit efforts before these subsequent elections.
This race may determine whether abortion is still legally in Wisconsin. Currently, abortion is permitted in most cases up to 20 weeks of pregnancy, but the state’s Supreme Court is currently considering an issue whether a law should be re -prohibits abortion.
But the actor Groat says he does not believe that abortion is a strong issue in this race as it was in recent years.
“People are in abortion, with the ads they have seen in the past three years in Wisconsin. So I don’t think it will play a big role in the past,” the Republican legislator says.
But besides the objective state issues, the broader and more immediate influence will be on national political feelings.
“He is larger than large,” says Brandon Schulles, a political strategic expert in Wisconsin.
If Mr. Shimel wins, he will be seen as “support for Trump’s victory in November [that] “He fears his position,” says Mr. Schools. [are working] They return to the states. “
