The UK has become the “sick person in the wealthy world” due to the increasing people who die of drugs, suicide and violence.

An international study showed that the death rates between the fifties of the last century in the United Kingdom have worsened in recent years compared to many other rich countries.

While the deaths caused by cancer and heart disease have decreased, the number of deaths caused by injuries, accidents and poisoning has increased, and has become much worse for the use of illegal drugs.

Trends mean that Britain is increasingly not step with other wonderful countries, most of which have been improved in the number of people who died of these reasons.

The increase in drug-related deaths was to the extent that its rate that occurred in the United Kingdom was three times higher in 2019-between both sexes-of the average of 21 other countries.

The results are present in a report before health Foundation Thinktank, based on an in -depth study of health and death patterns in countries 22 by academics at the London College of Hygiene and Equatorial Medicine (LSHTM). They concluded that “the health of the United Kingdom wanders.”

The growing death rate in the UK is especially clear among people of work age, between the ages of 25 and 49. The deaths among women at that age increased by 46 % and men by 31 %, between 1990 and 2023.

In contrast, deaths fell on 19 of the other 21 other countries, as the United States and Canada only showed the same height of the United Kingdom. Britain is now the fourth highest male and sixth male death rate among the 22 countries. The United States topped both league tables.

“This report is a healthy examination that we cannot ignore – and the diagnosis is dark,” said Jennifer Dixon, CEO of the Health Corporation.

“The UK has become the sick person in the wealthy world, especially for people of working age. While other countries moved forward, we stopped – and in some areas they slipped badly.”

Dickson pointed to an improvement in death rates in the United Kingdom since 1990, which slowed dramatically during 2010, with the austerity policies followed by the coalition government after 2010 an important factor. By 2023, women in the UK had a 14 % higher death rate than the center in other countries, while among men of all ages was 9 %.

“This is shocking because most of the deaths between the ages of 25 and 49 can be avoided in principle.”

The numbers of the National Statistics Office showed that 5,448 people passed away as a result of drug poisoning in England and Wales in 2023 – 11 % in the previous year and the highest number since it started records in 1993. The death rate was in 2023 – 93 per million – twice the 43.5 per 100,000 that occurred recently with 2012.

The deaths also increased due to suicide, but the alcohol -related deaths that were exposed to women and fell to men between 2009 and 2019.

The Local Government and Withou Association, a charity for drugs, called on the government to facilitate drug use, the people close to them and health professionals to reach the Naluxon, an emergency antidote to excess doses that involve heroin, metadon and other medicines.

“We also know that making people in the treatment of organized matter is extremely important to reduce the numbers of drug deaths, and thus we continue to call for high -quality opium therapy,” said Robin Pollard, head of politics and influence in Withou.
