For a lot of our history, Americans were erased through a myth of their own invention: that we are one people, that “America” means the same for all of us. In late summer 1664, an English military officer named Richard Nichols led a fleet of four warships across the Atlantic Ocean with the intention of converting the emerging American colonies. Under their agreement, New Amsterdam will retain mixed population and Dutch features of capitalism and relative tolerance, but the settlement and its residents will be transferred to English rule. Nichols proudly wrote James that he re -named the city with one of his titles: “I was given to this place, the name N. Yorke.”
Then Nichols turned into his other mission. Decades ago, the militants had planted colonies in New England, with Boston as their rule. Nichols and his envoys had to bring the Puritanians to the heel, to force them to put modern differences and respect the king and his government. But the militants created a strong aura bacteria, crushing the political opposition and religious diversity with violence. They considered that Stewart and their followers did not spoil and corruption, while they saw themselves as a chosen people. Nichols was not anywhere with them.
For the descendants of the militants, the American regime of the government that was falsified in the eighteenth century was just a way to reach the promised land.
A few Americans have heard about Richard Nichols, but today we live with the repercussions of his mission. New York and New England continued to become competing centers for power and ideology: one pluralism and mental worldwide; Other moral, monochrome, and late. Geography has turned over the centuries, but these ideologies have grown with the nation.
