What Lester Holt told Tom Llamas before handing over ‘NBC Nightly News’

Tom went to Al -Amas for the first time to the headquarters of the NBC Rockefeller Center in 2000 as a new trainee.

Llamas, 45, is the Lester Holt tasks, who will do Transfer full -time to “Dateline” from NBC After a 10 years In the anchor chair. It will remain an anchor “The upper story,” Live news newsletter around the clock on the free nBC News network now.

The son of the Cuban immigrants grew up in Miami, where he continues to have strong relationships (pop star Gloria Estefan and “Sabado Jaganti”, Don Francisco He attended a party in Florida to celebrate his upgrade). He lives in Weststers County, New York, with his wife, Jennifer, and three children between the ages of 12 and nine and seven, and a room for the Vinyl records group that was built from a decade of drilling while traveling around the world in the mission.

He recently spoke with the Times about his new role.

I have known Lester Holt since I was a 21 -year -old production assistant at NBC News. What advice he gave you to Your new role?

He married this job. And so I asked him about that, because my children always knew me as a network reporter and network broadcaster. But he told me, “Your life will change.” He explained to me that everyone wants a piece of you and there will be a lot of demands, even more than ever.

He was right in that. He said, “You have to make the right decisions when it comes to your professional life and your family.” My wife and children know that sometimes I will be in a small game in the league or I will be in a school play, and I must run and jump on a plane because there is urgent news. They understand that their father is doing it. But we always have talks on this topic. This is difficult.

Do you watch your children? NBC Nightly News and The upper story?

Oh yes.

I had my 7 -year -old child explaining the elections for his classmates. He was walking when President Biden resigned and Kamala Harris took over. Sometimes it is difficult. They were watching that night during Hurricane Milton last summer when an adapter exploded over my head, and this is a little frightening. There were some text messages and calls to me quickly.

Sometimes they watch a little and we must turn it off. But it is very connected. They know the world around them. It is the same way that she grew up. We saw the news in English and Spanish as much as I can remember. Because my father was always looking for news from Cuba.

What are your memories of watching early news?

I can really remember any time when Fidel Castro would have an interview. It was always a big moment, right? I remember that my father was watching the interview and then decided whether it was a fair interview or not, and I had an open conversation about it. So I hear about fair conversations all my life. I see what it means and how viewers interact with that.

Did this inspire you to go to the profession?

I do not know if this is an inspiration as much as it was a testimony of the importance of the news. My family relied on the news. They wanted to know what was happening in their homeland. They wanted to know what was happening in America. They listened, and they trust these people.

What made the powers that you decide that you should do this “The upper story” during the “night standing”?

In fact, it was my idea.

Now, in this country, it should be everywhere. I did not want to lose what we created for three and a half years. We have just been nominated to provide amazing heritage offers such as “Nightly News”, “ABC World News Tonight” and “CBS Event News”. To be in that circle with a three -year -old broadcast show, this was one of the greatest achievements of my career. Because this was emerging. Many people said that we cannot do this, and we have.

President Trump mainly announced the war Diversity, fairness and inclusion policies. [The Federal Communications Commission has called for an investigation into NBC’s parent firm Comcast for what it describes as “DEI discrimination.] He has The silence of the achievement of being the first Latin linking the English -speaking night newsletter?

I don’t think I got this job because I am of Spanish origin; I think I got this job because I am the best person for this position. I know that this is what NBC also thinks.

The story of my life is something I am very proud of. [My parents] It came mainly to this country with nothing. They had no money, barely spoke the language, and this amazing country gave them a second chance. He gave them a new house. They taught me a hard work, but they also taught me to love this country. I do, I think this is the greatest place in the world. To become a “Nightly News” broadcaster tells me that the American dream is still very alive.

You are the one who generates flowing musicand But you have a Vinyl record set. How did that happen?

Ten or 12 years ago, I went to my friend’s house in Los Angeles and has a record player. I think he played “sticky fingers” from Rolling Stones. We are only cold and listened to the album. And I thought, “What a great experience.”

Then I realized that the other fun part of the records is just finding and collecting them, and trying to get original pressure. I have Wilson Pique’s records that were made in Spain. I have Beatles records where the font notes and the album cover are different languages. I have a room where I have – you seem to walk in a box. It is the place where I read the paper sometimes. It is the place where I am preparing for the big elections. I will be there for hours. How to comfort.

What is on the rotating disk at the present time?

I am at the stage of the difficult stage, so I listen to a lot of Blake arts, and a lot of Adderley. I was trying to find great albums. This wonderful collection of five records of Bruce Springstin, the running that he had in the late 1970s, was picked up. And a wonderful album, which it turned to, is “from Elvis in Mimphis”. This was recorded in 1969, when Jimmy Hendricks was starting and Woodstock was happening. It is just a rustic Americana album with beautiful songs. I got the boys in Memphis supporting him.

YouE Good taste in music.

I appreciate it.
