A24 Delays ‘Legend of Ochi’ After Director Loses House in L.A. Fires

“The Legend of Ochi” will be released in theaters on April 25, instead of its previous date of February 28. The film will premiere at Sundance on January 26.

The film, which marks Saxon’s directorial debut, uses puppetry, animatronics, matte paintings and 3D animation to tell the story of a shy farm girl named Yuri, who lives in a remote village on the island of Carpathia and has been raised to fear an elusive animal. The species is known as Ochi. But when Yuri discovers that injured baby Uchi has been left behind, she runs away in an attempt to bring him home. “News of the World” star Helena Zengel stars in “The Legend of Ochi,” with Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson and Willem Dafoe.

Saxon produced The Legend of Ochi for $10 million. He has previously made short films with his production company Encyclopedia Pictura and directed music videos for artists such as Grizzly Bear and Björk. He was staying in Altadena before the wildfires broke out, which authorities are still working to contain in Southern California.

“We lost our home, our entire street, and most of our city. Ashes to ashes dust to dust,” Saxon tweeted earlier in January. “Altadena was the best place I have ever lived. An innocent, charming and above all beautiful city. From another time. And everything is gone.”

“Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo executive produced “The Legend of Ochi” with Mike LaRocca, Angela Russo Ostot, Louise Lovegrove, Alex Blabbinger, Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Timo Argelander and Elisa Lavares. Producers are Saxon, Richard Pitt, Tracy Carlson and Jonathan Wang.
