In a statement to police, Westergaard thanked the Yemassee community for its support, saying “it has been a real effort and community effort.” Police had advised those who encountered the missing monkeys to refrain from interacting with them and to immediately call 911.
Police said all the females were between 6 and 7 pounds – they were never used for testing and are too small to carry the disease.
