Denis Law’s warmth and wit made a lasting impression | Soccer

In Richard Williams’ wonderful retrospective on the late, great Dennis Law, he mentions that Dennis idolized Rod Stewart (Denis Law: Ballet star who scored an open goal, January 17). I remember being a host at a very chaotic Rod Stewart concert in 1972 in Manchester. Halfway through, the music stopped, Dennis was brought on the stage, and Mr. Stewart knelt down and bowed before his hero. Dennis, in keeping with his calmer demeanor off the field, seemed slightly touched by the gesture. Having met him myself, I can attest that, in private, he was a warm, friendly and considerate man.

Dennis Law was known for his strong use of the English language. Years ago I heard a story from Professor Peter WorsleyThen Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Manchester. He was a huge Manchester United fan and a big fan of Dennis. Peter was standing at the urinal at Euston station before returning to Manchester when Dennis, to his surprise and delight, arrived to use the kiosk next door. He looked across and said, “And how is Professor Peter Worsley doing today?” Peter mumbled something appropriate and then asked, “But how do you know me?” “You’re still wearing your damn name badge,” Dennis replied.

No matter how many times I read tributes to the great Dennis Law, I could never find any reference to what my late husband, Gerard Campbell, considered one of the highlights of his life – the moment when he and his football idol stood side by side at the urinal .
