Trump administration cancels top NASA climate lab’s lease at Columbia University

The Trump administration has canceled the lease contract to the highest climate control laboratory, located in New York City, as of May 31, according to an email seen by CNN.

In e -mail, the director of the NASA Godard Space Center in Maryland State has informed the imminent closure of the NASA Godard Institute for Space Studies and the transition to distant work.

The affected laboratory, also known as NASA Jess, of Columbia University and is located above dinner on the upper western side of Manhattan, which appeared on the TV program “Sinfield”. Scientists are conducting climate and space studies during cooperation with researchers in Colombia.

“Work, data, products, and science will continue because science is accomplished by people and not by buildings,” said NASA Jess Gavin Schmidt director of CNN.

“Employees will be placed in the temporary distance of work while NASA is seeking options for a new area for the Giss team,” NASA spokesman said in a statement.

The Trump administration is currently fighting with Colombia, among other universities, regarding its policies on anti -Semitism and other issues, and it blocks billions of dollars in financing federal research. On Thursday, a federal judge cleared the administration’s ability to prevent money from schools to participate in diversity, fairness and integration programs – or Dei. Two other trials are studying similar challenges.

The NASA laboratory tracks global climatic conditions, which works as one of the main centers all over the world for this information, as well as the National Administration of Oceanic and Air Country. It also manages computer models that indicate the future climate conditions of Earth and seek to better understand global climate change. The supercomputs of these models are located in Maryland.

“We will provide the necessary support to employees to move to the short -term remote work agreements as the agency seeks a permanent new space for the team,” said the director of Goddard Mackeenzie Lystrup in the email, a copy of which was shared with CNN.

The source of NASA, who asked not to be identified due to the fear of revenge, told CNN that it would be difficult for the laboratory to carry out his duties remotely, and that this step is “frustrating” for the workforce. In addition, the same scientists “are waiting for the ax to fall into the task of Earth Sciences” in the agency.

The proposal of the management budget, if it is by Congress, will reduce the agency’s science programs by about 50 %.

“Gisss has an important place in the history of space science, for decades of pioneering work in understanding the atmosphere and systems of planets – especially from our Earth,” said Lystrup in the email. “While the lease contract expires, the institute’s mission continues.”
