We show we’re human when we put pen to paper | Education

Loss of hand writing skills has long -term effects that exceed the ability to direct the pen across the paper (Signature movements: Are we losing the ability to write by hand?, January 21). I had the honor to introduce students to Virginia Wolf’s article “Women and the Novel”, which was later revised and expanded to become the famous text “a special room”. The effect of seeing her words hurriedly in purple ink with removal while searching for the ideal word is the pleasure of watching and something that will never be matched by the word written on the typewriter. How will the literary archive look like for future students, if it is only present as words printed on the screen? I doubt that it can reach the same level of excitement.

The disappearance of handwriting is concerned about all the reasons presented by Christine Rosen – but the hand -written letters definitely increase cognitive skills, it can also be tracked. A senior colleague at the Arts School once explained how he was trained to draw the large Roman letters when he was a student at the South Kensington School of Art (which later became the Royal College of Art). The students were asked to follow a large sample of the large Roman letters upon their arrival every morning – until they no longer need to do so, after they absorbed all its characteristics, and at this point the daily tracking of the next letter began. Each student left the school as he was able to draw the Roman letters manually. It seems that even the decree, even if it is a “mechanical”, is something better remembered and understood.

Christine Rosen writes very well about the many ways that writers benefit from writing by hand, which is surprising how small you write about the ways that readers of handwritten observations will benefit. Call science may be mocking as a false science, however there are lines scientists who are able to read a lot of the writer from his handwriting. My late father employed a young man who was clearly working in the wrong job. He sent a sample of his hand to the graphic scholar Marianne Jacobi, who announced that he should be in the press or financial. He became the editor -in -chief of a national newspaper in the city, in a profession in which he would not think if he had not given his hand line such a clear vision.

I started using computers 50 years ago, gradually and fortunately, almost stopped handwriting. In the late eighties, I spent three weeks learning to write with touch, and never looked back. Christine Rosen misses the pleasure of reading without trying to interpret handwriting.

It also lacks the pleasure of writing quickly to keep up with your mind. Investing signatures – and thus hand writing – in the sense? Never, not in my world.

Christine Rosen’s article on handwriting confirmed its utilitarian value in developing focus and focus. However, even if one is not a calligrapher, there is a tangible pleasure in using the pen and ink and seeing his ideas flowing from head to hand to the paper.

Make thought visible is the essence of creativity, and we lose this when we do not manually form our words.

If children generally do not learn connected hand writing, then the question that arises is: How will future scholars read and interpret documents written in hand from the past?

It has recently appeared that this is already a problem when my husband received a petition from an American researcher who specializes in the work and life of George Elliot. She wanted retired teachers to copy some of the author’s messages, because her students were unable to read the connected writing.
